The Shimmer in Terraria.
The Aether biome containing a handful of Shimmer.

During a 1.4.4 Terraria version update on September 28, 2022, Re-Logic added various content, giving players more gameplay hours. One inclusion is the Shimmer – a rare liquid with unique properties present upon world creation.

This page covers everything about the Shimmer, including its function, location, and transmutations. You’ll also get various permanent boosts from this liquid, so we recommend checking it out!

What is Shimmer and How Does it Work?

The Shimmer appears as a shiny purplish liquid in Terraria. In Pre-Hardmode, you can encounter only a handful compared to an endless amount available upon defeating the Moon Lord. Regardless, the quantity of Shimmer upon the first encounter is enough to perform several unique properties it offers:

Player vs. Shimmer

 • Endless Fall. Getting into contact physically or attempting to fish will let you phase through any blocks until an opening is available. Many Terraria players are using this as an exploit to defeat Enraged Empress of Light and even Master Mode playthroughs.
 • Shimmering Debuff. Once in contact with the liquid, you won’t be able to move or use items. You’re also invincible from non-boss enemies in that state.

Items vs. Shimmer

 • Decrafting. Throwing certain items (table below) will extract their crafting ingredients. This method is good for crafting gear with a chance to get the best modifier possible without paying the Goblin Tinkerer.
 • Resource Return. Throwing certain items (table below) will give back common resources for crafting an item. For example, throwing a Copper Pickaxe in the Shimmer will yield Copper Ores. You can do this to profit or other purposes.
 • Complete Transmutation. Throwing certain items into the Shimmer (table below) will transform into something. Most are useless, like throwing Luminite and downgrading it into Chlorophyte Ores. However, some conversions are valuable, including Vital Crystal from Life Crystal and Arcane Crystal from Mana Crystal.

Note that we’ve included exclusive Shimmer transmutations in the tables below.

NPCs vs. Shimmer

 • Shimmer variants. Faelings and Shimmer Slimes are unique transformations so far. Other enemies coming into contact with the liquid typically become another type of monster.
 • Town NPCs. NPCs coming into contact with the Shimmer will change their appearance. This process has no gameplay effect and is for visual purposes.

Successful item transmutations will float upwards, leaving the liquid and acting like Souls. They remain in that state until you pick them up. The same goes for NPCs, although temporarily.

However, unsuccessful ones will leave items at the bottom of the Shimmer. Enemies will become invisible as well.

There’s more that’s happening to the Shimmer in Terraria. For example, a Hunter Potion will reveal submerged enemies like Werewolves immune to the Shimmering debuff. But it wouldn’t matter as much unless you’re doing an experiment or using exploits.

Where and How to Find the Shimmer in Terraria

The Aether biome in Terraria's World Map.
The Aether biome in the World Map.

Generating a world in Terraria, regardless of its configuration in the menu, will always have the Shimmer. So as early as Pre-Hardmode, head where the Jungle biome is, and expect it slightly near the Ocean. The Shimmer is precisely located in the Underground or Cavern layer, but you’ll certainly find the Aether as you keep digging down.

The Aether biome has a similar background as the Space layer, so take it as a marker.

In Hardmode, defeating the Moon Lord will grant Luminites, which you can craft into Luminite Bars at an Ancient Manipulator. You can then use those Luminite Bars to make the Bottomless Shimmer Bucket.

While you can always move the Shimmer liquid from the Aether biome to a nearby base through Pumps, we don’t recommend it.

Shimmer Item Decrafting

You can turn most items in Terraria into their ingredients in the Shimer.

This section lists separate tables for items with multiple recipes, special outputs, random ingredients, temporary non-decraftable, and totally non-craftable. We’ll explain every part.

Note: Using the Shimmer, you can decraft most items in Terraria with no problem. However, these are the exceptions:

Random Ingredients

All items in this list are products from using an Alchemy Table or Placed Bottle. The materials you’ll get when submerging them into the Shimmer are random.

Terraria: 3 Easy Ways to Stop the Corruption https://avidgamer.gg/terraria-how-to-stop-corruption/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=terraria-how-to-stop-corruption Thu, 10 Aug 2023 01:27:18 +0000 https://avidgamer.gg/?p=8671 More...]]>
Corruption biome in Terraria

Every world in Terraria has different biomes, and one of them is Corruption. It’s an evil you must eliminate, as the Dryad described. For that, we’ll help you do just that.

What is the Corruption Biome?

Prompting up a new world in Terraria will let you choose between Crimson and Corruption as of the 1.2 update. If you choose the latter, you’ll face the Eater of Worlds and have access to biome-exclusive items.

Pros:

 • Monsters in this biome have lower health, defense, and damage.
 • Most tools and weapons offer an advantage for swift and agile attacks in battle.

Cons:

 • Most tools and weapons are weaker than those from the Crimson biome, which will be disadvantageous against Hardmode bosses.
 • The Corruption biome’s terrain is more challenging because of the chasms you may fall into.

How to Stop the Corruption in Terraria

In this guide, we’re providing three known ways to stop Corruption from getting out of control. These are:

Contain and Quarantine

The player digging Hellevators in Terraria

Containing and quarantining the Corruption in Pre-Hardmode is necessary to keep your base safe and preserve essential materials. Otherwise, leaving the biome unchecked can lead to severe consequences, such as driving away NPCs and corrupting normal blocks.

Make sure to follow these steps to contain, quarantine, and eventually stop the Corruption in Terraria:

Step 1. Prepare and Gather Materials

Before starting, you should bring something in your Inventory that will increase your survivability while in the Corruption. We recommend stocking up on the following items to help you dig and escape from the tunnels you’ll make:

Digging ToolsMolten Pickaxe (best in Pre-Hardmode); If Wall of Flesh is defeated, Drills are perfect.
ConsumablesShine Potion, Obsidian Skin Potion, Mining Potion, Slice of Cake
AccessoriesAny Hook, Climbing Claws, Wings (in Hardmode), Ropes, and Rope Coils (optional)
MountsIf Wings aren’t acquired, bring Mounts that reduce or negate fall damage. Some items in Pre-Hardmode are Fuzzy Carrot, Honeyed Goggles, Mollusk Whistle, Slimy Saddle, and Pogo Stick.
WeaponsTo focus fully on the digging part, Ballista, Explosive Trap, and Flameburst Sentries are good. Imp Staff is the best you can get in Pre-Hardmode.

Step 2. Make Vertical and Horizontal Tunnels

After gearing up, choose what area you want to protect, like the Jungle or your base. To physically contain the evil biome from getting to these areas, you must dig six tiles wide Hellevators that reach the Underworld. Also, dig vertical tunnels surrounding these areas’ perimeter to keep the Corrupted tiles from infecting the blocks.

Once you see an infection, dig downwards immediately and match the number of vertical tunnels depending on the spread. Create Horizontal tunnels after defeating the Wall of Flesh in Terraria because it’ll automatically speed up the infection. Even better, do the hard work before facing the final Pre-Hardmode boss.

Lastly, you can place non-corruptible tiles over the six exposed blocks on the tunnel’s edges. Another option is to leave a 5-7 block barrier that will stick out from the tunnel to prevent thorns from growing. However, you must cover all ceilings, walls, and any exposed bottom sides of grass to stop infection.

Purify Using Green Solution

The player using the Terraformer and Green Solution in Terraria

After defeating the Wall of Flesh, your Corruption biome will generate V-shape strips and spread more rapidly throughout your Terraria world. It would be best to start preparing for World Conversion to stop it from taking over. See the steps below to learn how you can Purify Corruption:

Step 1: Get NPCs

Spawn the following NPCs to purify your world from Corruption. The Dryad will tell you the infection percentage in your world. On the other hand, the Steampunker will sell you two of the most critical pieces of equipment needed to purify your evil biomes.

See the table below on what you’ll need to spawn these two NPCs in Terraria:

NameDefeat
DryadEye of Cthulhu, Brain of Cthulhu, Skeletron, or Lepus in 3DS version
SteampunkerAny mechanical boss (Destroyer, Twins, or Skeletron Prime)

Step 2: Gather Equipment

ItemFunctionHow to Get
ClentaminatorCreate or destroy biomes by spreading chosen solutions to 60 blocks.Buy from the Steampunker for 2 Platinum Coins.
TerraformerSame function as Clentaminator, but reaches 95 blocks.Defeat the Moon Lord first then throw the Clentaminator to the Shimmer.
Green SolutionPurifies Corruption, Crimson, and Hallow. Best used with Clentaminator or Terraformer.Buy from the Steampunker for 15 Silver Coins.
Biome Sight PotionSee all evil biome spread (including Corruption) for five minutesBring Bottled Water (1), Blinkroot (1), Moonglow (1), Fireblossom (1), and Grass Seeds (5) at an Alchemy Table or Placed Bottle.

Step 3: Go to Your Hellevators

After creating tunnels in Step 2 of Way #1 to contain the evil biome’s spread during Pre-hardmode, you can proceed to purification upon entering Hardmode. Utilize the Horizontal and Vertical shafts you’ve constructed to aid your progress and continue to make more of them. However, you must be mindful of what weapon you’ll choose to rid your Terraria world of Corruption to aid your success.

If you use the Clentaminator, you must create the Hellevators 120 tiles away from each other since they can only reach 60 tiles. On the other hand, if you want to use the Terraformer, dig them 190 tiles apart because it can spray up to 95 blocks. Remembering this tip will help you avoid digging unnecessary tunnels and ensure you can spray all the blocks.

Step 4: Purify with Green Solution

After gathering the necessary equipment and creating your Hellevators, you can purify the evil biomes. To do this, choose between the Terraformer or Clentaminator to spray the Green Solution on Corrupted blocks.

Once you have Green Solutions, Weapons, and have consumed the Biome Sight Potion, you’re ready to purify and stop the Corruption in Terraria. For the Vertical Hellevator, spray the solution on your left and right one at a time until you carefully reach the bottom. On the other hand, you must spread the same solution on the floor and ceiling of the Horizontal shafts.

After spraying all of the Corrupt blocks through the tunnels you made, you must also purify the evil biomes on the surface. Then, ask the Dryad for the Corruption percentage left in your world. If you clear 100% of the infected tiles, you’ll receive the Good Riddance Achievement.

Use Rocket Launchers or Explosives

The player using Rocket Launchers in Terraria

Once you reach Hardmode, the evil biomes will spread more aggressively. Therefore you need to find faster ways to stop it from overtaking your world. You can use Bombs or Rocket Launchers to create the Hellevator. Be mindful, though, that this method will make your world messy.

Step 1: Get Rocket Launchers or Explosives

Sticky Dynamites are the best if you’re trying to stop the Corruption in Pre-Hardmode. You can buy a Dynamite from the Demolitionist for 20 Silver Coins each. Combining it with Gel will result in its sticky form.

However, if you’re in Hardmode, Rocket Launchers are far superior options. Here’s our recommendation (note that all of them don’t destroy tiles even if you’re using certain rockets):

ItemUse TimeHow to Get
Snowman Cannon15 (Very Fast)Drops upon defeating Ice Queen (4.44% to 7.78% in Classic; 15.55% to 31.11% in Expert & Master)
Celebration30 (Average)Buy from the Party Girl for 80 Gold Coins
Celebration MK26 (Insanely Fast)Drops upon defeating Moon Lord or its Treasure Bag (22.2%)

Here are the best ammunitions to use:

NameHow to Get
Rocket IIBuy from the Cyborg for 2 Silver Coins & 50 Copper Coins
Rocket IVBuy from the Cyborg for 5 Silver Coins
Cluster Rocket IIBuy from the Cyborg for 15 Silver Coins
Mini-Nuke IIBring Rocket IV (100) and Shroomite Bar (1) at the Autohammer

Additionally, if you don’t use the CelebrationMK2, we recommend equipping the following ammunition with other Rocket Launchers. The Mini-Nuke II can destroy blocks quicker than the Shroomite Digging Claw and Drill Containment Unit. Meanwhile, Cluster Rocket II can shoot out shrapnel from its secondary explosion, destroying additional tiles that can help you dig faster.

Step 2: Make Vertical Tunnels or Hellevators

After getting any of the items mentioned, you can start making Trenches or Hellevators to quarantine or destroy Corruption. Just strap on some wings or elevate yourself before firing on the ground below. Also, make sure to keep your distance to avoid getting blasted.

Step 3: Clean Up

After using Explosives or Rocket Launchers, your vertical and horizontal tunnels will be messy and uneven. Therefore, we suggest you tidy up your pit in a six-tile fashion, as mentioned in Ways #1 and #2. You can do this by evenly lining your walls, floor, and ceilings with incorruptible tiles.

Conclusion

Stopping the Corruption in your Terraria world takes patience – a lot. But in the end, we’re confident you can do it for better gameplay.

Terraria: How to Remove Corruption (Full Guide 2022) https://avidgamer.gg/how-to-get-rid-of-corruption-in-terraria/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=how-to-get-rid-of-corruption-in-terraria Thu, 15 Sep 2022 19:55:24 +0000 https://avidgamer.gg/?p=1722 More...]]> The Corruption is one of three evil biomes in the game, alongside Crimson and Hallow. Each one of them has a tendency to slowly overtake your world, preventing you from accessing other materials. In the end, you might lose progress and will resort to creating a new file.

As the environment changes, so do the monsters. The newly converted biome will bring tougher enemies such as Eater of Souls, Devourer, and many more. Having one and the same opponents also limits the loot you can acquire in the game.

What are Corruption and Crimson?

Corruption and Crimson are two evil biomes in the game. We also have Hallow, a Hardmode exclusive biome that spreads in a similar way as these two but doesn’t cause the same issues.

Whenever you create a new world, there’s a 50% chance that one of these two evil biomes will appear. Mostly, they’re interchangeable and works similarly except from monsters, loot, and bosses.

It’s easy to tell if a world is turned into Corruption or Crimson based on color schemes. The Crimson biome features a blood red color, while the Corruption environment has musky purple. Each one of them has a unique music theme playing as you traverse the area.

Aside from the music and colors, there are other things that indicates an evil biome. Corruption features purple mountains, grass, and numerous dead trees. The background effects are also gloomier compared to healthy regions. This is the only place where you can find Chasms, Shadow Orbs, Ebonstone, Demon Altars, and Vile Mushrooms.

The bosses in these two areas are also different. Brain of Cthulhu is common for red worlds and Eater of Worlds for purple ones.

What Corruption Does to Your World

As time passes, this biome will start spreading its influence. The surrounding areas will turn purple, trees and grass will change, and the infected area will be inhabited by different monsters. Here are the main reasons why you should stop this spread:

 • This evil environment can destroy other areas, thus preventing game completion.
 • It’ll remove other monsters and bosses from the game, making it impossible to get certain loot.
 • The monsters that spawn in this environment are much tougher, making the game tougher overall. It’s best to avoid them at the start of the game.
 • NPCs won’t spawn in Corruption and Crimson regions. If it affects your base, it’ll prevent the spawning of Steampunker, a vendor who sells a tool for removing infected tiles.

Aside from all these things, the spread also affects playability. You don’t want to fight the same opponents over and over again. The game quickly becomes dull and frustrating.

How does the Corruption Spread?

Here are some rules regarding Corruption spread:

 • Corruption blocks can covert almost any block as long as they’re within three to six tiles.
 • During pre-Hardmode, the infection can only affect bushes and grass. So, creating a stone wall on both sides of the biome is a good solution that would temporarily stop the spread.
 • Once you reach Hardmode, the spread will also occur underground and can go through stone and vines. It becomes more menacing, turning any tile into its Corruption counterpart.
 • The infection normally spreads during pre-Hardmode. Once you kill Wall of Flesh, it starts spreading at double speed and turns back to normal after defeating Plantera. When the game goes into Harmode, you should rush this boss as soon as possible.
 • Keep in mind that the infection spreads six times faster on the surface, so this should be your priority when removing the infected blocks.
 • The best way to determine the spread speed is by checking the surface. The infection will first start affecting grass, turning it from green to purple color. This will also spawn thorns, which can cause damage as you run through them, making traveling annoying.
 • Like the biome, thorns take over surrounding areas, spawning in larger quantities as long as they’re four tiles from health blocks.
 • Be careful when destroying Demon Altars. Their destruction is necessary for spawning new Hardmode ores. However, crushing one of them will also turn random blocks on the map into their Corruption counterpart. That way, the infection can spread to areas you previously insulated.
 • When certain biomes become infected, this will lead to the creation of new, unique monsters. For example, the Corrupted Desert will allow the spawning of Dark Mummies.

How to get rid of corruption in Terraria?

The best way to tackle the issue is by introducing preventative measures during pre-Hardmode. Given that the spread is negligible during this phase, you can take your time and create massive structures, thus getting ready for Hardmode.

Protecting the base

The first thing you have to do is to suspend your base in the air. This will prevent infection from spreading to your houses. In other words, you can rest assured that the NPCs will always spawn within the base. This is crucial when you unlock Steampunker and Clentaminator.

Keep in mind this will cause a few issues until you can create a Bed. You’ll always spawn on the ground, beneath the base, and you’ll have to climb up to reach crafting stations.

Alternatively, you can dig a massive moat around the base that spreads horizontally and vertically. This will insulate the ground just beneath the structure. You can leave it empty, or you can fill it with non-corruptible materials.

Ideally, the moat should be six tiles wide on all sides, thus preventing the spread from the outside. Keep in mind that Corruption Blocks might still appear beneath your base when you destroy Demon Altars.

You might also consider placing Hallow Blocks around your base, encircling them with Mud Blocks from the inside. Hallow will stop the spread of Crimson and Corruption from the outside, and Mud Blocks prevent the spread of Hallow toward the inside. Unfortunately, this also means that Hallow enemies will start appearing close to your base.

Hellavator and segmentation

Hellavator is a hole that leads straight to lava level. It’s an efficient way to traverse the underground, and it definitely speeds up your mining time.

Hellavators have another purpose, and that’s the segmentation of the map. You can use them to isolate the base along vertical lines, as well as biomes of interest (Jungle, in particular). That way, you can rest assured that the Corruption won’t spread from the sides, especially on the surface.

Alternatively, you can make two Hellavators on both sides of the evil biome. By doing so, you contain the whole zone.

After creating a few Hellevators, you might also want to consider creating horizontal shafts that spread throughout the map. You can even install Minecarts for fast travel between sections. By doing these things, you’ll split up the map into sections. If Corruption starts converting a part of the map, you can go there and remove troublesome blocks.

These steps are especially effective if you don’t destroy too many Demon Altars.

Clentaminator

Clentaminator is a tool that you can buy from Steampunker after defeating mechanical bosses. It allows you to shoot different types of solutions, turning nearby blocks into appropriate biomes. For example, you can use it to turn regular blocks into Hallow, Crimson, and Corruption counterparts, but also to revert them back to normal.

Clentaminator is great for the surface, but it tends to struggle while underground. As you’re moving through the shafts, you can’t spray all of the infected tiles within the ground. One of the best ways to improve its efficiency below the surface level is by creating Hellavators and spraying both sides of the walls as you go downward.

To make the most out of the tool, it’s recommended that you perform map segmentation, as explained in the previous section. Keep in mind that these solutions are extremely expensive. One unit costs 25 silver, and to buy a stack of 999 Green Solutions, you need more than 25 platinum coins.

Out of the five available solutions, you need to focus on Green Solution that allows you to purify blocks are restore them to the previous biome. The material works like ammo by placing it in ammunition inventory.
