Terraria (Wiki): Sergeant United Shield

The Sergeant United Shield is a type of thrown melee weapon that returns to the player after damaging an enemy (pierces four at close range), traveling for 24 tiles away, ricocheting for two consecutive times, or hitting a solid object. Upon usage, the Sergeant United Shield will grant the Striking Moment buff for 3s (desktop, mobile, console).

When normally used, the Sergeant United Shield will not emit light. It also phases through any type of block when returning to the user. The Sergeant United Shield can also squeeze through one-block-wide gaps at the right range, which is extremely tricky. Once succeeded, however, the boomerang will infinitely bounce before returning to the thrower. When used on liquids, the Sergeant United Shield’s travel speed and range drastically decrease.

The Sergeant United Shield can damage up to five enemies when thrown. While in midair, it will seek out the nearest enemy, chaining up to four additional bodies. Once a target is damaged, the Sergeant United Shield will not hit it again until the weapon is thrown again.

Of all Boomerangs, the Sergeant United Shield has the slowest use time and weakest knockback. However, it has a reasonably high projectile travel speed and homing capabilities, compensating for its shortcomings.

Enabling Godmode in Journey Mode while parrying will do nothing.

It is a general rule to aim above enemies for unlimited piercing when using the Sergeant United Shield. This unique property is possible thanks to all Boomerang’s capability of phasing through walls. One can easily handle a wave of extremely strong enemies, albeit the Light Disc deals low knockback.

Damaging enemies on both ends of a wall is possible when executed at the right position and range. This unique property makes the Sergeant United Shield pass through walls unhinged while keeping hostiles at bay.

Since the Sergeant United Shield is a melee weapon, some accessories, all flasks, and armor can enhance its travel range, flight speed, and apply flask-related buffs.

Sergeant United Shield itself or paired with another shield and pressing the Open/Activate button will make the player brace for an incoming attack. If timed correctly before taking a hit, the player will parry. The process prevents contact damage from the enemy, deals 200% damage to the attacker, applies +5 Knockback, and grants 30 immunity frames (60 with the Cross Necklace equipped) aside from the Striking Moment buff for the next 5s.

The Striking Moment buff should be synergized with weapons that deal massive damage.

Dealt damage by parrying an attack is decreased by banners (25% in Classic Mode or lower, 50% in Expert Mode or above). With negative luck, incoming and reflected damage is potentially increased, capped at +1000ATK.

Since the Sergeant United Shield can act as a shield, the player will temporarily gain +20DEF until the shield is lowered.

Because of the Sergeant United Shield’s mentioned properties, it is considered excellent against waves of enemies, invasions or events, and segmented Worms. However, the Boomerang’s capabilities are extended by acting as an emergency shield from the following (total damage negation is exclusive to contact damage only):

• Traps
• Enemy projectiles
• Fall damage
• Lava damage

The Sergeant United Shield is best modified with Godly or Demonic, providing a wide array of stats improvement.
