Our Review of the Mod

The Calamity Mod: A Whole New Experience

The Calamity Mod is a truly remarkable addition to Terraria, providing a refreshing and unique experience. This mod adds content from pre-hard mode and all the way up to Moonlord and beyond, making it a must-have for any Terraria enthusiast. The less you know, the better. So we will not give too many spoilers regarding Calamity Mod.

It’s noteworthy that Calamity Mod is designed for players seeking a challenge. As such, playing the Master mode is a must to unlock a harder difficulty than Expert, “Revengeance” mode.

While easier difficulties are possible, they don’t offer the intended Calamity experience, excluding access to the “Revengeance” mode too! That’s minus the new hidden mechanics for bosses, as an example.

Before playing Calamity Mod, we highly recommend familiarizing yourself with how Terraria works, as the former isn’t beginner-friendly.

WHAT EXACTLY IS THE CALAMITY MOD?

The Calamity Mod is a massive content expansion for the game, adding major structures, biomes, bosses, NPCs, and more. Included in the package are 40 new tracks we recommend you listen to while playing the game for a more immersive experience.

The Calamity mod completely changes how Terraria is played because of how many changes it makes to the vanilla experience.

One of the most important changes that The Calamity Mod makes is the addition of a leveling system. This means the player comes with scalable stats like crit chance, projectile speed, overall damage, and more. Keeping track of those stats is easy with the Stat Meter displayed below:

YOU NEED TO START A NEW WORLD

You can play the mod on a world where you have beaten Moonlord and any previous worlds. However, all new structures, ores, and biomes won’t be available once you load. As a result, you’ll be missing more than half of the mod, so starting a new one is a must.

The Calamity Mod adds 6 new biomes to explore and have fun with. For this reason, we recommend creating a new Medium or Large world to play. These new biomes are spread all over the world, even the sky has its own new biome. Remember to check the sky once in a while because there may appear more planets after you defeat some bosses.

Speaking of bosses, one of the most important additions for most players is that there are 24 new bosses! All of them are unique too, like a Slime God boss in pre-hard mode.

And as you may expect, there is a new final boss called “The Supreme Calamitas”.

Calamity "Calamitas"

But that’s not all! When you defeat bosses, they now give you a piece of lore.

Obtaining pieces of lore is optional. However, it adds more immersion and significance to the bosses that may appeal to some players. The lore also lets you discover the stories of a world left behind and its inhabitants.

WHERE TO START

In the vanilla game, you fight bosses sporadically, and things are more peaceful than they’re not. In The Calamity Mod, not only is the content almost double, but it makes everything more difficult. It even makes things that already exist in the game harder than they already are. So if you are planning to download this mod, you need to know how and where to start.

First of all, when you start, you’ll be given a “Starter Bag” that includes some weapons and potions. There are unique sets of bags for each class in Terraria. Meaning, you may have a different set of items every time you log in on another character.

As we mentioned before, the Calamity mod is designed to be played in Revengeance Mode. This mod offers a range of fascinating new gameplay mechanics, like the introduction of the Rage and Adrenaline Meter. Once these meters are full, you can activate them by pressing a designated key. Adrenaline and Rage give you a 200% and 35% damage boost, respectively.

For starters, you must defeat the Desert Scourge as the first boss in The Calamity mod. Use the Desert Medallion made from sand to spawn it. Afterward, fight the monster in the Desert or Underground Desert, before the Eye of Cthulhu and after King Slime.

SOME TIPS AND CHANGES

  • There are now Shrines that appear in different biomes, giving you unique items.
  • NPCs now sell new items, including a variety of buff potions.
  • Planets spawn in Space and some of them provide really useful items that can give you huge benefits, especially if they are explored early-game.
  • An Evil Island spawns in the sky above either the Dungeon or the Jungle.
  • There is now a new class that’s called “Rogue” and it utilizes a unique stealth mechanic to deal extra damage.
