Jojo's Bizarre Adventure posters for Phantom Blood, Battle Tendency, Stardust Crusaders, Diamond is Unbreakable, and Stone Ocean.

Aside from the popular Dio Brando meme, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventures revolve around the Joestar family line. From the first two seasons of the series, the bloodline uses Hamon energy as a means of offense and defense. Beyond that – until the latest Jojolands – are Stands with unique abilities.

In this list, we’ve compiled all the best moments in the anime. JJBA has five animated series, with three on manga, so we’ll present 20 scenes.

1.Bruford’s Restored Humanity

Bruford stopping his attack to Jonathan Joestar after getting attacked by Hamon.

The author, Hirohiko Araki, used several historical references in Jojo’s Bizarre Adventures. One of them is Mary Stuart, which rivals Queen Elizabeth. The former had two loyal guards named Bruford and Tarkus (which didn’t exist in real life).

In S1 E6 of Phantom Blood, Jonathan Joestar and Bruford are in a 1v1 duel. Contrary to Dio and Tarkus’ bloodlust, their villain comrade retains a code of honor despite his deep hatred towards humanity.

Jonathan Joestar’s expression changed in the middle of the fight upon Bruford, provoking him to strike as if the pain wouldn’t matter. With the latter charging with his sword, Jonathan “trusted” him that he would stop attacking. Using Hamon, Bruford’s former humanity was restored, albeit the Ripple slowly destroying his zombie body.

The battle ended with a mere wound from Jonathan, and the honorable warrior left an iconic sword named Luck and Pluck.

Besides Jonathan acknowledging Robert E.O. Speedwagon’s family and friends (the reason why the former spared the latter’s life), this best anime moment will make you cry.

2. Jonathan Joestar’s Final Moments

Jonathan Joestar embracing Dio's head on his grave.

This one is both the best and saddest anime moment in Phantom Blood.

After Erina Pendleton and Jonathan Joestar married, they boarded a ship. Unknowingly, a headless Dio and his zombie minions are inside, and they commence the attack. Initially, Erina wanted to perish alongside his husband, but he convinced her to live her life.

Jonathan convinces Erina to seal the deal, but his journey ends there as he is shot by Dio’s Space Ripper Stingy Eyes. Think of the ability as the standard destructive laser that can cut a hard object in half. Despite the attack, Jonathan embraced a Dio persistently taking over his body. Unfortunately, the mighty gentleman passed away from his wounds.

Jonathan Joestar died nobly despite Dio Brando showing him the opposite.

3. Your Next Line Is…!

Joseph Joestar predicting a thug's next line.

This anime moment might sound corny for the new generation of viewers, but as a loyal fan of JJBA, it’s a comedic relief.

After the Phantom Blood events, we see another JoJo going by Joseph Joestar. There are various events in this season where the main character, during his duels, says the popular line. This is one of many unforgettable proofs that Joseph is the funniest Joestar member in Battle Tendency.

4. Joseph Joestar’s Fight Against Wamuu

Joseph Joestar sparing a decapitated Wamuu as an honor.

The humankind’s future is a tug-of-war battle between the three pillar men and humanity. Earth is a goner if the Red Stone of Aja falls into the wrong hands. Joseph Joestar and Lisa Lisa’s proposal to fight Wamuu and Kars one-on-one is accepted, and we get to see JoJo go first.

The battle starts with Joseph and Wamuu riding a horse and picking up a weapon to decimate each other. It’s one of the most breathtaking moments as both are ready to counter-attack.

However, Wamuu is defeated when the Molotov Cocktail’s evaporated oil and Caesar’s bandana enter the pillar man’s body. As a result, his body exploded, severing his head. JoJo then bleed himself to ease his opponent’s pain instead of finishing him off right away. The two had conversations about the warrior code and honor, which they value.

5. Joseph Joestar’s Final Fight Against Kars

Joseph Joestar using the Stone of Aja to guard against Kars' attack.

This best anime scene in Jojo’s Bizarre Adventures takes place in episode 26, with an increasingly desperate Joseph. With half of Stroheim’s body missing, Kars is ready to strike Joestar with the final blow. The Red Stone of Aja is then raised by JoJo, causing the volcano to erupt and send the two into the sky.

At this moment, we get to see yet another “your next line is” moment. Jojo’s severed arm chokes Kars with debris from the volcano! While they’re not powerful enough to defeat the remaining pillar man, the force sends him to space.

6. Joseph Appearing at His Own Funeral

Joseph Joestar shocking everyone in his funeral.

Who would’ve thought that Joseph Joestar would haunt his remaining family? After his supposed passing, the JoJo is alive and well!

Of course, it’s one good way for Araki to end Battle Tendency. For that reason, it’s one of the best anime moments in Jojo’s Bizarre Adventures that we’ll never forget!

7. Jotaro Fights Dio / Joseph Joestar’s Escape From Death

Dio getting defeated by Jotaro / Joseph Joestar came back from the dead after getting revived by Jotaro.

We head straight to the end despite the unforgettable Kakyoin’s lick meme technically earning a spot in this list. It sure is funny, but let’s be serious around here.

Remember that scene when Dio said, “Instead of running away, you’re approaching me”? It’s this one, in episode 46 of Stardust Crusaders, to be exact. This battle between the final boss and the third Joestar protagonist is breathtaking, Dio’s stand literally stopped time and made us wow. Of course, Jotaro claimed victory and revived Joseph Joestar in the end.

8. Jotaro Outsmarted Telence D’Arby

Telence D'Arby asking Jotaro if he's cheating (one of the best anime moments in Jojo's Bizarre Adventures).

After finding Dio’s mansion in Egypt and defeating Daniel D’Arby, Jotaro and his crew are greeted by Telence. With Kakyoin and Joseph Joestar, the three had to wage their souls yet again before they could find Dio.

Kakyoin’s defeat was easy for Telence, thus taking his soul. When it’s Jotaro’s turn, he pulls a trick alongside Joseph. Telence’s stand, Atum, can read the soul of a human. So, when he asked if Joseph and Jotaro were rigging the system, we got to see the prompt, “No! No! No!” Asking again if it’s rigged, the opposite answer came.

With another pitch, Jotaro struck a home run, which left the younger D’Arby surrendering. It’s not explicitly mentioned, but his soul did. As a result, Kakyoin’s consciousness and own soul are returned.

This one of the best anime moments became a breeding ground for memes, including fan-made videos with Jotaro and Telence playing several games like Minecraft.

9. Okuyasu Saves Joseph Joestar

Okuyasu saving Joseph Joestar from Red Hot Chili Pepper's Stand User attack.

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventures Diamond is Unbreakable is that part where your enemies are like high school bullies. Of course, the exception is Kira Yoshikage, as he can kill you with a touch.

Nijimura Okuyasu possesses the most powerful Stand in Diamond is Unbreakable (and arguably in the whole series). However, Araki nerfed him by giving him low intelligence stats, as shown in his first battle against Josuke. After becoming a JoBro, he once had to decide who to punch.

The ordeal started when Red Hot Chili Pepper – the Stand of Akira Otoishi – assassinated Okuyasu’s older brother. The team proceeds to find the killer and ends up disarming him, but now he’s going straight to a retired Joseph Joestar. Thankfully, Okuyasu is aboard the boat but needs to decide who the impostor is.

In the end, Okuyasu punched the real villain, although he later admitted he intended to punch them both. Needless to say, his action saved Joseph’s life and earned him this best anime moment in JJBA.

10. Hayato Kawajiri Breaks the Time Loop Curse

Hayato Kawajiri trying to defeat Yoshikage Kira without Josuke and Okuyasu.

Kira Yoshikage is on death’s door when he comes across Kosaku Kawajiri. With Aya’s Cinderella Stand, Kira impersonates Kosaku while leaving the room traceless of his crimes. He then returned to the Kawajiri family and began living a new life.

Sometime later, Hayato’s suspicions are correct that Yoshikage Kira is an impostor in the household. This results in the former spying on his “father” – including his new way of living and attitude. Eventually, Hayato learned the truth, prompting Kira to create a time loop in the guise of Bites the Dust.

Bites the Dust acts as a bomb that is targeted towards Josuke’s team attempting to find Killer Queen’s Stand user. However, Hayato fails countless times, having to witness the gruesome deaths of Rohan, Josuke, Jotaro, Koichi, and Okuyasu.

However, Hayato’s resolve is stronger, leading him to break the curse by injuring Kira using Stray Cat. Thankfully, Josuke and Okuyasu were nearby, and they overheard someone saying the perpetrator’s name. With Crazy Diamond attempting to subdue Kira, the latter has to retrieve Bites the Dust and Killer Queen.

11. Jotaro Sends Kira to His Demise and Saved Morioh

Jotaro Kujo defeating Kira Yoshikage.

While Josuke Higashikata’s Crazy Diamond can restore objects or living beings with the Stand user’s touch, it can’t finish the job. Still, with Okayu’s overpowered The Hand, it adds up to buy time for help. This best anime moment in Jojo’s Bizarre Adventures takes shortly after Hayato Kawajiri is able to break the time loop.

Jotaro’s Stand – Star Platinum – incapacitates an already-injured Kira Yoshikage with the help of the Time Stop ability. It wasn’t a lethal blow, but the final strike was made by none other than the ambulance. Of course, the credit also goes to Koichi’s Echoes Act Three before the villain could activate Bites the Dust.

As a side character, Jotaro using his Stand with the unforgettable hero music is a refreshing piece of art from JJBA part three. Still, all revelations from his exact defeat until his untimely demise are all revealed by Kira Yoshikage’s first victim, Reimi Sugimoto. It’s a gruesome end, but we don’t think he deserves it.

12. Torture Dance

Torture Dance in Golden Wind.

In Jojo’s Bizarre Adventures Vento Aureo, we get to see several meme-able anime moments. One of them – and perhaps the very foundation of the season – is the Torture Dance.

After Bruno Bucciarati and his gang manage to survive Mario Zucchero’s Soft Machine, the interrogation begins. With Bruno’s Sticky Fingers Stand, Mario’s head is “detached” from his body, which they then hang on the boat.

Narancia Ghirga, Pannacotta Fugo, and Guido Mista began the questioning but yielded no positive result. As a response, they start performing a choreography accompanied by upbeat music.

The original song is titled Canzoni preferite, made by Yugo Kanno. While the torture dance doesn’t do anything exactly, our interpretation is it’s a sign that the protagonists aren’t afraid of their enemy. Moreover, we also attribute it to making the captured villain piss their pants and reveal the mastermind behind the assault.

13. Bruno and Giorno in Train

Bruno detecting Giorno's "lies" in Vento Aureo.

In the first few episodes of Vento Aureo, Bruno Bucciarati, and Giorno Giovanna aren’t allies yet. Instead, the higher-ups send the former to investigate the man behind Leaky-Eye Luca’s demise, none other than the main protagonist.

The first part of this best anime moment is Giorno entering the subway as Bruno catches his attention. Their conversation started naturally until the latter asked about Leaky-Eye Luca and if Giorno was responsible. After a few exchanges, the Pasione leader left – or so we thought.

Bruno Bucciarati explicitly revealed that he excels at Lie Detection. His method involves tasting a person’s sweat – if the act of sweating isn’t enough evidence. He claims that the sweeter it is, the higher the chance that someone’s lying. Truly Bizarre, isn’t it?

But it doesn’t end there. We get to see them fight one-on-one. Later on, though, it’s revealed that Giorno Giovanna sees the good in Bucciarati and that he’s putting up a facade.

14. Too Much Potassium for Polpo

Polpo killing himself after mistaking a Banana for a revolver.

Giorno Giovanna’s ultimate dream is to become the gang leader throughout Italy. This process requires facing the real boss – Diavolo – but he’s way too far to get there. However, he receives unexpected support from the Pasione leader himself, Bruno, to get there.

The young protagonist is directed to visit Capo Polpo and take on a test: keeping the lighter flame ignited. If he fails, he won’t be able to join the mafia. But Giorno is so determined, although things took a lot of turns when Koichi barged in and an old man extinguished it.

Capo Polpo didn’t acknowledge if reigniting the lighter flame was allowed. Nonetheless, his Stand Black Sabbath appears with the Stand Arrow. In the process, one casualty is recorded after a failed Stand Awakening. Still, Giorno managed to return the lighter to the detained gang leader, with a surprise, of course.

With Gold Experience, Giorno morphed a gun into a piece of Banana. When Polpo is about to eat it, the banana-disguised gun fired bullets, instantly killing the gang leader.

15. Polnareff Encounters Diavolo For The Second Time

Polnareff facing off Diavolo again in Vento Aureo.

After the events of Stardust Crusaders in Jojo’s Bizarre Adventures season, Jean Pierre Polnareff goes overseas, leaving Jotaro and Joseph Joestar. In search of more Stand Arrows (as they deduced from Dio Brando’s Stand Awakening), he finds one in Italy. Unfortunately, he had to go toe-to-toe against Diavolo, with an overpowered Stand ability called King Crimson.

The battle almost took his life, resulting in Polnareff hiding in the shadows. For a long time, he searched for someone who could be an ally in destroying Diavolo, and when he did, it was none other than Giorno Giovanna’s crew. It’s sad to see the Frenchman using a wheelchair for mobility. So, what makes it one of the best anime moments? His appearance.

However, it’s also cut short when he encounters Diavolo another time, killing him in the process. With Silver Chariot Requiem, however, he managed to live inside Coco Jumbo – a gift turtle from the mafia boss. As far as the story goes, we’re yet to see him finally leaving the material realm (please don’t).

16. Jail Strip Search

Jolyne's strip search in Stone Ocean.

Starting this list with Jolyne Cujoh is one scene that best introduces the 6th JoJo. She isn’t as pure as Jonathan Joestar or Jotaro Kujo, especially in the first episode of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventures Stone Ocean.

We believe this one of the best anime moments explains the context more via watching the clip, so we’ll leave it just that.

17. Foo Fighters

Foo Fighters (plankton form) transforming into Atroe.

Let’s set aside Jolyne and her JoBro for a moment. Perhaps the funniest character in the sixth installment of JJBA is Foo Fighters. All her moments (excluding the more mature fights) are comedy gold and arguably the best in anime.

For context, Foo Fighters or F.F. is a large bundle of planktons taking the form of Atroe (former prisoner). Devoid of human interaction, suffice to say this humanoid entity is the type to do a lot of crazy stuff. This ranges from acting all childish (in a funny way) to licking dirty water.

18. Jolyne Reunites With Her Dad

Jolyne and Jotaro escaping prison.

Jotaro Kujo is a busy man. Despite defeating Dio Brando long before, he has concluded the possibility of having more loyalists on the run. One of them is Enrico Pucci with a Stand that can steal Jotaro’s. Suffice it to say Star Platinum falling in the hands of the priest will spell doom to the world.

With harm’s way, Jotaro had to distance himself from Jolyne and his wife, deteriorating their family. It’s also the unfortunate cause of Jolyne’s distant attitude from a typical Joestar.

At some point in Stone Ocean, Emporio warned Jolyne not to entertain the visitor as it would result in negative consequences. However, curiosity took over her, hence meeting Jotaro. While their reuniting had some cute father-daughter moments, it’s cut short when enemy Stand users almost get them.

In the end, Jotaro’s Star Platinum is stolen by Pucci. Jolyne, on the chase, will try to retrieve his father’s disc before it’s too late.

19. Wes Bluemarin’s Powers

Pucci defeating Weather Report.

Weather Report is one of Jolyne’s core allies from team Emporio. He’s described as reserved and stoic, only speaking when absolutely necessary. As all of them are after Pucci (except Anasui until later on), Weather Report comes to aid Jolyne.

It’s later revealed that Weather Report – who goes by the name of Wes Bluemarin – is father Pucci’s younger twin. Their backstory is a little bit “Alabama-like”. Still, his Stand rivaling C-Moon in the ending of Stone Ocean creates one of the best anime moments there is.

20. Emporio Defeating the Final Boss

Emporio defeating Pucci.

Stone Ocean wraps up in an alternate universe where Jolyne and the crew survive. However, it’s safe to say they’re not them anymore. While this may look like a decent ending, Emporio may have some problems with it.

In a universe with no Pucci, Emporio sure did take a lot of effort to do that. Thanks to Weather Report’s Stand, he’s able to defeat the villain with no problem.

12 Sad Animes That Will Bring You Tears (September Picks) https://avidgamer.gg/sad-animes-to-watch-september/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=sad-animes-to-watch-september Tue, 12 Sep 2023 08:19:19 +0000 https://avidgamer.gg/?p=9228 More...]]>
Weathering With You, Violet Evergarden, and A Silent Voice - some sad anime to watch.

Anime has been with us since the day Sailor Moon and similar titles left a long-lasting impact on viewers. Genres ranging from sci-fi to rom-coms are what you’ll expect to appear, making rounds of success in the media. But as we move forward to it, how about watching some titles that will change your perspective in life?

This list presents 12 sad animes that are watch-worthy and will make you emotional. We’ll explain each title and give a clear reason for what makes them great.

1. Violet Evergarden

Violet Evergarden crying..

While every anime in this list is equally heartbreaking, nothing beats the story of Violet Evergarden. It’s a show about self-exploration and understanding human emotions like love.

The story revolves around Violet Evergarden – an ex-soldier raised to become a superweapon meant to dominate the battlefield and bring victory to Leidenschaftlich. When peace is soon brought to the world, she has to find a new purpose in life.

Post-war, Violet finds herself working at the CH Postal Company, where she works as an Auto Memory Doll. Think of it as someone who helps clients understand their thoughts.

What to Expect / What Makes it Great: We’re no strangers to the concept of self-love and value. But because of our personal life circumstances, we fail to introduce it to the heart and mind. Being devoid of those feelings isn’t the end of it. What’s worse is the people who care for us leave them confused.

What would you do if someone said I Love You, but you’re at a loss of words afterward?

2. Grave of the Fireflies

Setsuko and Seita smiling.

Grave of the Fireflies takes on another level with the author (Akiyuki Nosaka) attaching her life experience to this anime film. While watching this hour-long animation, don’t forget your tissues.

Japan is in the middle of the Second World War when Grave of the Fireflies takes place. It’s a story of hardship between Seita and Setsuko Yokokawa – two siblings who found themselves in an unlucky place. Together, they’re racing against time to make the most out of it in a Fallout-like world where humanity is almost gone.

What to Expect / What Makes it Great: This Studio Ghibli masterpiece is something pulled straight from the history books. In war, there are no losers or winners, only people with broken spirits, especially those in Japan. Grave of the Fireflies will teach you the harsh reality of the world we’re living in under the facade of smiles and happy faces.

If there’s one thing that this sad anime will ultimately leave aside from trauma and a lot of tears, it’s strength. The next best lesson is being kind in this cruel world.

3. Oshi No Ko

Ai Hoshino performing on-stage.

The first episode of Oshi No Ko may alert the cringe police in your system but bear with us. This sad anime is more than pop idols, virtual reality, and money. It’s the story of an esteemed Ai Hoshino, meant to dominate the music industry with her talents. However, a “superfan” murdered her, leaving her two children.

Currently, Aqua and Ruby Hoshino set out to find out the real perpetrator of the murder, with evident details that both followed their mother’s career choice.

While Oshi No Ko is yet to conclude, many fans expect more. Well, it seems like you’ll bring less tissue this time.

What to Expect / What Makes it Great: If there’s one thing that Oshi No Ko is successful at, it’s deceiving first-time viewers. Under the flashy animation and YOASOBI’s catchy song lies a deep, dark secret waiting to be discovered.

4. Tokyo Revengers

Takemichi Hanagaki smiling.

Tokyo Revengers isn’t as sad as most anime on this list, but it’s still a good pick (mid-tier).

The story centers around a super unlucky guy named Takemichi Hanagaki, who finds himself able to go back in time. The catch, however, is it’s the time when his ex-girlfriend is killed.

There’s a little complication to Takemichi’s time-travel powers, but we’ll spare you the details. For now, his goal is to try to change the past to get the result he wanted. We recommend watching it if you want to know what happens to his grand plan. Still, bring some tissues, as this anime has some depressing episodes.

What to Expect / What Makes it Great: Again, Tokyo Revengers isn’t precisely a sad anime like Grave of the Fireflies and Violet Evergarden. It’s understandable if it’s not your cup of tea – we experienced the same. But you’ll learn a thing or two about camaraderie in Takemichi’s gang life.

5. Your Name

Taki and Mitsuha switching bodies in the sad anime, Your Name.

Makoto Shinkai’s works have reached global popularity, and you’ll find no consistency in rankings, whether Kimi no Nawa is on the top or not. So, put it however you like. We respect if Suzume or Weathering With You is in your first place. However, it’s undeniable that Your Name / Kimi no Nawa will make you tear up a lot.

This sad anime revolves around Taki and Mitsuha living a simple life until both of them wish to switch bodies. Coincidentally, they did and found themselves experiencing a unique life perspective.

Ultimately, they’re tasked with a mission that only the two can fully understand and accomplish. This sad anime will make you cry, with an unexpected ending to top it off!

What to Expect / What Makes it Great: Your Name is reminiscent of the game Life is Strange, although another anime adapted the concept better. Instead, this title focuses on the destiny and what happens to those we meet. It may sound corny, but such a thing exists, determined by your life choices.

Also, Kimi no Nawa tackles the element of longing for something missing in your life with a sense of deja vu (the good way). Overall, this relatable anime is a must-watch, as we’re confident in its quality.

6. I Want to Eat Your Pancreas

Haruki and Sakura in I Want To Eat Your Pancreas.

I Want to Eat Your Pancreas is another sad anime that will leave you crying and thinking for days. It may have an unconventional title, but the phrase “don’t judge a book by its cover” applies here.

The plot talks about Sakura and Haruki, who became special friends throughout the film upon the latter discovering that she’s suffering from a life-threatening disease. Haruki, the kind guy he is, spends the time accompanying Sakura and the long list of things she always wanted to do. On top of that is an unexpected conclusion that shocked even us.

What to Expect / What Makes it Great: We often take things for granted. A friend sends you an email, and you reply a week later, only to find out he’s gone forever. While there’s a subtle hint of that characteristic to Haruki, you’ll discover why as you watch the sad anime. After all, many viewers can relate to him.

I Want to Eat Your Pancreas also tackles philosophical elements like Memento Mori and Amor Fati. Instead of dreading too much, Sakura chose to spend her last moments doing the things she wanted to do (unapologetically). Moreover, she further reinforced the idea of accepting whatever happens to us and a reminder we’re mortals.

Tears and tissues-aside, I Want to Eat Your Pancreas has tidbits of valuable life lessons, but we recommend a first-hand experience by watching it.

7. Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day

Menma and Jinta in Anohana.

Dying is a subject most people will push away when having conversations. Of course, it’s even more painful with a pang of burdensome guilt on the shoulder, like the ex-members of a childhood friend gang.

Enter Jinta – the former leader of a group of friends. After Meiko Honma died in a gruesome accident, this guy started to grow apart from the crew (and all members). While there’s no one at fault, one situation leading to another ended up losing their friend.

Sometime later, Jinta reported Meiko haunting her, but for good reasons. Watch the tear-inducing anime to find out the rest of the details.

What to Expect / What Makes it Great: Grief is a heavy feeling to bear. But Meiko taught the gang why going forward with life is important. It’s even gloomier once you see Meiko smiling while being aware of her death. But in the end, you have to learn why you have to do the same.

8. Your Lie in April

Kousei (frowning) and Kaori (smiling) in Your Lie in April.

Kousei Arima gets all the spotlight in Your Lie in April – an anime with an unconventional theme.

Kousei Arima is a child prodigy, thanks to his supportive mother. Unfortunately, he’s devastated beyond imagination after his mother passed away. If that’s not bad enough, the young protagonist lost grip on his well-honed talent.

In all the twists and turns, there are more to come upon meeting a fellow musician, Kaori Miyazono, who plays the Violin. From this point, get ready for a lot of gut punches.

What to Expect / What Makes it Great: Your Lie in April has some interesting, relatable elements. For instance, character development, which is very well-written. Overall, this sad anime presents new knowledge for coping with loss and life-changing tips for handling trauma and depression.

9. Weathering With You

Hodaka trying to grab Hina in Weathering With You.

Weathering With You is another masterpiece made by Makoto Shinkai. As the title implies, elements of weather are involved in this sad anime.

The story starts after Hodaka runs away from an abusive household to Tokyo City. His hopes of finding a self-sustaining job fail after spending the last dime, with his failure accounting more due to his age. It’s obviously an undesirable start, but things turn good when he encounters a young lady named Hina Amano.

Hina Amano is a mysterious girl with the unique power to manipulate weather on will. However, overusing has complications, leading her to decide Tokyo’s fate. Because of Weathering With You’s well-written characters and plot, you’ll shed a lot of tears as soon as you start approaching the anime’s climax.

What to Expect / What Makes it Great: Like the Grave of the Fireflies, Weathering With You has a similar message it intends to deliver to the audience. The difference is intensity, whereas Hodaka’s world is slightly more forgiving.

Selfishness is what makes a villain in any anime. But while Hodaka is viewed as such by some viewers, we beg to differ. The young boy has every right to be one. A good question to ask is the reason for acting good if the world is cruel to you. But we digress.

From Hina’s perspective, Weathering With You is also reminiscent of Dontnod Entertainment’s Life is Strange. The game is about Max and Chloe in a similar situation where the former is challenged to save their city or loved ones. In real life, we stick to a choice we regret the least, and that’s what matters.

10. A Silent Voice

Shoko Nishimiya and Shoya Ishida making amends in A Silent Voice.

Shoya Ishida’s story in A Silent Voice is the classic main protagonist redemption arc in anime. As a young boy, he’s battled his boredom at the expense of a girl trying to befriend her named Shoko Nishimiya. The ordeal resulted in Shoko transferring to school multiple times, with Shoya getting the hate until his teenage years even becoming bullied himself.

With a supposed “final mission”, he goes to seek out the person he wronged. However, Shoya’s story is long, with countless realizations and discoveries for him to uncover.

What to Expect / What Makes it Great: A Silent Voice may have a mellow theme in the first few episodes, but the conflict resolution in the end is satisfying. Of course, expect to shed tears as the anime has themes relating to depression.

Shoya Ishida and Shoko Nishimiya’s story delivers a valuable message about empathy that you can pick up.

11. Angel Beats!

Yuzuru Otonashi in Angel Beats!

Angel Beats! is the first isekai anime in this list where Yuzuru Otonashi finds himself dead with no memories save for his name. While it isn’t particularly a sad anime, the ending can be a little gut-wrenching.

The place Yuzuru is trapped in can be best described as a ‘purgatory’. He later meets several others like Kanade Tachibana, who helps others move on and be reincarnated. On the other side of the faction are SSS (Shinda Senkai Sensen) members who rebel against the Angel, who ultimately wants to confront ‘God’.

Throughout Angel Beats!, anyone can die multiple times and get respawned. However, when Yui never returns (and is later revealed to be reincarnated in the real world), they begin teaming up to do the same. The few final episodes show a simple ending, yet speculative to branch to two further interpretations:

 • Yuzuru moved on.
 • Yuzuru stays in the place and waits for Kanade to come back.

What to Expect / What Makes it Great: From our remarks earlier, expect Angel Beats! to have a lot of comedy elements in them. There are some moments that left us crying like Kanade leaving Yuzuru behind. When the anime included gratitude and moving from past actions (things get serious), this is how we know it deserves to be on this list.

12. Fruits Basket

Tohru and a Sohma family member in Fruits Basket.

Considering its slice-of-life theme, the main Fruits Basket arc has a good balance of wholesome and sad anime moments. However, we recommend watching the prologue, where a young Tohru had to experience loss and grief. The scenes get pretty dark as well, so prepare for that.

Tohru stumbled upon the Sohma family, shrouded in mystery after the events of her mother’s passing. She slowly learns about a curse with her getting accustomed to the clan. A normal person hugging any members (as long as they’re opposite sex) will temporarily morph a Sohma into their respective Zodiac animal.

In the end, Tohru managed to break the curse. Don’t worry. There’s no violence here. Everyone gets their happy ending, even the main antagonist herself, who is forced to do all the inconvenience.

What to Expect / What Makes it Great: Fruits Basket touched on the topic of battling depression against all odds. This is particularly evident when Tohru breaks down as she remembers her traumatic childhood and mother’s passing. Aside from that, it also showcases a wholesome trait most women lack or refuse to show – their nurturing side.

My Hero Academia: 17 Best Anime Moments (Ranked) https://avidgamer.gg/my-hero-academia-best-anime-moments/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=my-hero-academia-best-anime-moments Sat, 09 Sep 2023 09:42:31 +0000 https://avidgamer.gg/?p=9165 More...]]>
All Might defeating All For One and Endeavor obliterating (partially) a Nomu in My Hero Academia).

My Hero Academia revolves around the story of a quirkless Izuku Midoriya when he ran across the No. 1 Hero. Throughout the anime and manga, Kohei Horikoshi (mangaka) managed to produce a consistent writing quality, making it a must-watch. While the anime tackles heroism and a bit of comedy, some scenes remain unforgettable.

In this list, we’ve compiled and ranked all the best anime moments in My Hero Academia.

Caution: Massive spoilers for anime and manga ahead. Continue at your discretion.

17. Wolfram Gets Sandwiched in My Hero Academia: Two Heroes

Izuku Midoriya and All Might defeating Wolfram from My Hero Academia: Two Heroes.

Wolfram is the main antagonist of the Two Heroes film in the franchise. He’s the one who manipulated David Shield to hand over the Quirk Amplification Device. As Wolfram applies the item to himself, his Metal Manipulation and Muscle Augmentation quirk is significantly boosted.

With the already-struggling Deku to even land blows, All Might appears to aid in battle. At first, both are overwhelmed, but they still win the fight like a father-son tandem. We can’t describe how amazing the visuals are with this one, so we recommend taking a look at it.

16. Lady Nagant’s Change of Heart

Deku convincing Lady Nagant that there's still hope (one of the best anime moments in My Hero Academia).

My Hero Academia’s world of heroic acts has its blacks and whites – but Midoriya thinks otherwise. Lady Nagant’s fall from grace is one that’s understandable, even reflecting the state of modern society. With some corrupt Hero Public Safety Commission members, she fell for the dark side.

Lady Nagant escaped and casually met All For One in the Dark Hero arc. The latter then tasked her to bring Deku so he could steal his quirk. We’ve seen Lady Nagant’s deadly Sniper Rifle ability, which her prey wouldn’t survive had he not awakened his other skills.

At the climax, Lady Nagant is ready to kill the quirkless Kai Chisaki (as part of their deal), but Deku manages to save him. The two then engage in a conversation, saying that the peace they seek is fake. Deku then pointed out the good left in her, purposely missing the shot and offering him to surrender without a fight.

Despite suffering from an internal injury after All For One activates a self-destructing quirk, Lady Nagant becomes a valuable ally. Later in the Final War arc, she uses her quirk to save Deku from getting decayed by severing Shigaraki’s arms from a hospital room.

15. Twice Overcoming His Trauma

Jin Bubaigawara (Twice) overcoming his identity crisis during the Villain Academia arc (one of the best moments in the anime).

The League of Villains also has a fair share of best moments in the anime. Enter Twice, who can clone himself that makes building an army possible. This scene happened during the battle with Skeptic and, later, Re-Destro.

For context, Twice is incapable of distinguishing if he’s real, considering his clones say the same. But in the end, he overcame his trauma, gaining the upper hand versus Re-Destro’s army.

14. Eri Smiling

Eri finally smiling during the U.A. Festival in MHA.

Eri’s story in My Hero Academia is one of the most disturbing out there. With her Rewind quirk, Overhaul (Kai Chisaki) synthesized her blood into quirk-erasing bullets. On top of that, she has to experience dying and getting revived for who knows how many times.

Things changed when Eri first encountered Lemillion and Deku patrolling. The ending? A traumatized Eri was finally freed from the likes of Chisaki.

When Class 1-A successfully delivered a top-tier performance during the U.A. Festival, Eri finally smiles. We bet that’s the best anime moment in My Hero Academia season four.

13. Endeavor vs Nomu

Endeavor (partially) defeating a Nomu using his Prominence Burn.

After All Might retires from the pro-hero scene, Endeavor steps in as the No. 1 hero. The controversial fire-wielding character finds himself contending against a Nomu, secretly plotted by Dabi.

For its flashiness and the close-quarters combat elements, this anime moment reigns second after the whole Todoroki family confronting their long-lost kin. Regardless, Endeavor stood strong with his allies’ help amid crowd criticisms.

12. Bakugo’s Character Development

Bakugo finally apologizing to Izuku Midoriya after all the bullying.

Katsuki Bakugo is the childhood friend of Izuku Midoriya, who also goes to U.A. High School. Since the first episode, Bakugo has picked fights with Deku, even with the latter disliking the idea.

During the Dark Hero arc, however, we see Bakugo finally apologizing to Deku. While many community members say it’s overhyped, it’s still one of the best moments in the anime.

11. Deku vs Class 1A

Class 1-A convincing Deku to come back to UA High (one of the best anime moments in My Hero Academia.

Speaking of the Dark Hero arc, Deku also faced his classmates who were trying to convince him to return to U.A.

The premise begins with Deku leaving the High School, with cooperation from All Might, Endeavor, Hawks, and Best Jeanist. As All For One is a large threat again after escaping Tartarus imprisonment, Deku knows what’s up. Despite this, his classmates are still willing to fight beside him, even if it will cost their lives.

10. Stain: The Hero Killer Moments

Stain encouraging All Might.

Rather than causing meaningless chaos in Japan like the League of Villains, Stain targets those unworthy of the Hero title. His latest victim, Ingenium, left Tenya Iida vengeful to the anti-hero.

Stain’s quirk is all about utility. One can easily beat him up using long-ranged attacks, but his raw skills make him a slippery target. After an encounter with Shoto, Deku, and Tenya, we see him saving Deku after being captured by the Winged Nomu. If that’s eyebrow-raising, let’s just say the Hero Killer has unconventional morals.

Later in the Dark Hero arc, Stain escapes from Tartarus and finds All Might to relay a piece of valuable information. As Chizome was under the same roof as All For One, it’ll definitely be a game-changer for the heroes. On top of that, All Might’s sense of purpose is renewed despite the backlash from Japanese citizens.

9. Shoto Using His Fire Quirk

Shoto using his fire quirk for the first time.

The Todorokis are notorious for being a controversial family in My Hero Academia. Driven by obsession to become the number one hero, Endeavor indoctrinated his firstborn, Toya, resulting in his “death” later on. The same cycle repeats with Shoto, with unfortunate outcomes as his older brother.

Because of circumstances from his early life, Shoto refused to use his father’s quirk. Instead, he only uses the Ice he inherited from his mother until Midoriya gives an unconventional encouragement.

Deku vs. Shoto during the U.A. Sports Festival is one of the best anime moments in MHA season two. Although Midoriya acted recklessly and lost, he helped push a friend to his best potential.

8. Himiko Toga and Twice’s Interactions

Himiko Toga and Jin Bubaigawara dancing in My Hero Academia.

Saying that Toga and Jin are lovey doveys in their time with the League of Villains feels illegal. But you can’t deny that these two have some wholesome moments in the anime you won’t forget easily. Through thick and thin, they managed to survive the whole ordeal with the Shie Hassaikai Raid. We also witnessed how caring they are to each other.

By digging their backstories, it’s later revealed that Himiko Toga and Twice are broken individuals. Despite their villainous acts, there’s still humanity left to them.

7. Deku Awakening Other Quirks

Izuku Midoriya unlocking Black Whip, Danger Sense, Smokescreen, and Fa Jin in My Hero Academia (one of the best anime moments).

There’s a theory that All For One’s doctor may have stolen young Midoriya’s quirk at the start of My Hero Academia. As the story progresses, he becomes the 9th successor of One For All – but it doesn’t end there.

The previous wielders of One For All have been showing up to Deku since his fight against Shinso in the U.A. Festival. However, he gets to meet and greet all of them eventually, with revelations like having multiple quirks possibly coming to light.

Among new abilities include:

 • Black Whip. Inherited from Banjo Daigoro. It allows the user to immobilize enemies and increase mobility. The Black Whip’s power depends on the user’s emotions.
 • Float. Inherited from Nana Shimura. Because of One For All’s stockpiling properties, Deku can use this ability at high speeds.
 • Danger Sense. Inherited from Shinomori Hikage. This ability greatly helped Deku with his fight against Muscular Man when he reappeared after the Tartarus Prison breakout. The quirk’s user help detect potential threats in the surrounding and gives ample time to react appropriately.
 • Smokescreen. Inherited from En. Helpful for escaping or launching surprise attacks, most notably when Midoriya fights Lady Nagant.
 • Fa Jin. Inherited from the third user of One For All. This quirk gives the user an explosive burst of speed and power after performing repetitive movements.
 • Gearshift. Inherited from the second user of One For All. This ability lets Midoriya change anything’s speed, even possibly ignoring the laws of inertia.

6. Deku and Eri Defeating Overhaul

Deku delivering a final blow to Overhaul.

Overhaul’s overpowered quirk is one lethal weapon heroes had to deal with in seasons three and four. Once Chisaki touches your skin, you’re done for. Thankfully, Deku’s powers proved a worthy contender to the ever-persistent villain that theoretically would and could ruin Japan.

As one of the best moments in the series, Eri’s quirk activation helps drive victory to the good guys.

5. Shigaraki Awakens His Power

Shigaraki staring at Re-Destro after a bloody fight.

In the eyes of the League of Villains, Shigaraki’s awakening (with his buffed powers) is a good thing. By default, his quirk is short-range, and activating decay needs to be a hand-to-hand combat. However, moments before his supposed capture is a slight mistake from the heroes.

Despite the effort from Mirko and the gang, Shigaraki managed to gain consciousness and cause another destruction. The scale is immeasurable as touching the ground lets his quirk’s effects travel.

4. Himiko Toga Reviving a Defeated Ochaco

Himiko Toga transferring her blood to an unconscious Ochaco.

Toga’s villainous acts supposedly originate after a series of unlucky events in her childhood. Even worse, people close to her didn’t show any empathy, considering her quirk’s evil-like characteristics. It’s also noteworthy that Shigaraki influenced her through the belief that everything must be destroyed.

At the Final War’s climax, Toga takes on Twice’s appearance and clones an army that shall vanquish every hero. Later, we see the villain fighting against Ochaco Uraraka, with the latter talking sense to the former.

With a lot of blood dripping and weakening strength, Toga is finally knocked sense. But at the looks of things, her contender won’t make it alive, so she has to do a blood transfusion on the spot. In the end, Ochaco is revived, with Toga’s fate uncertain.

If you read the manga, this scene is going to be emotional as it tackles the history of Himiko Toga. That’s why we think this is one of the best anime moments in My Hero Academia.

3. Todoroki Family vs Dabi

Shoto Todoroki finally defeating Dabi.

Endeavor and Rei’s quirk marriage is one controversial topic in the world of My Hero Academia. Instead of love, the former’s agenda is only for self-interest. It’s a lot of trauma to process for the children born in that household.

Shoto might have a bad experience, but Toya has it worse. With Endeavor’s current position as No. 2, he wants the best candidate to surpass All Might and reach the top spot. Toya Todoroki is surprisingly enthusiastic, while Shoto thinks otherwise.

With an obsession with getting stronger, Toya finds himself in harm’s way, causing Endeavor to stop him. Still, the firstborn pleaded for his dad to come to Sekoto Peak but was left alone. The young boy lost control at the height of things and apparently passed away.

It was later revealed during the battle with an awakened Shigaraki that Toya Todoroki’s alive – now known as the murderous Dabi.

Jumping a few chapters, we see Shoto and Endeavor fighting Dabi. The villain’s body has been burning up, although the Ice quirk of Rei, Natsuo, and Fuyumi saves him.

In the end, Dabi is still himself. His mind is conditioned to hate the Todoroki family, especially Endeavor. Once this scene is animated, you can expect an emotional roller coaster.

2. One For All vs All For One

One For All unleashing the United States of Smash in My Hero Academia (one of the best anime moments).

All Might live up to his name, being the No. 1 hero until his rematch with his (im)mortal nemesis, All For One. It’s no mystery that All For One has been hunting down One For All users to steal the quirk. However, all of them are successful at repelling the thief.

During the Kamino Incident, All Might has to face All For One despite only having residues of the ability. Thanks to Deku, Kaminari, Momo, and Ida, they managed to snatch away Bakugo from the battlefield. Of course, this means more freedom for All Might to unleash all his strength.

All Might and All For One’s rematch is phenomenal. It’s the second-best anime moment in My Hero Academia, as it’s loaded with heroism. This part is also where he used his ultimate move, the United States of Smash, to fully subdue the villain.

Despite having to reveal his lost form, contrary to being muscular, people continue to cheer All Might. The celebrated No. 1 hero is loved and respected, even until the latest episode when Stain showed up.

1. Armored All Might vs All For One

All Might utilizing Hercules full with quirk-infused support items to buy time for MIdoriya and fight All For One once more.

Inspired by Deku’s action in their first meeting, a quirkless Toshinori Yagi faced All For One once more. Technically, All Might have quirks with the help of support items. Hercules provides the hero abilities inspired by Class 1-A’s.

Initially, Tsukauchi Naomasa thought it was too dangerous, but All Might persisted. It’s evident that one should have their spirits down with their current situation. But during the battle, he remembers his deceased mentor’s message that choosing to smile in the hard times makes them the strongest.

The battle between All Might and All For One consists of exchanging taunts and blows. However, there are too many death flags for the hero. If he’s going out like this, he will always be remembered. But deep down, we wish for a silver lining where Stain uses his Blood Curdle quirk to immobilize All For One and buy time for All Might.

As My Hero Academia’s season seven is yet to be released, you can expect this to be the best anime moment in the series. The battle with Shigaraki and Deku is yet to be concluded, so prepare for the best and worst-case scenario.

18 Best 90s Anime List (September 2023 Picks) https://avidgamer.gg/18-best-90s-anime-list-september-2023-picks/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=18-best-90s-anime-list-september-2023-picks Sat, 09 Sep 2023 04:59:29 +0000 https://avidgamer.gg/?p=9155 More...]]>
Princess Mononoke, Sailor Moon, and Cowboy Bebop in one frame.

Whether you’re from Southeast Asia or North America, you’re most likely aware that animes date back to the early 1900s. Fast forward 90 years later, titles like Sailor Moon and Cowboy Bebop managed to pass through the competitive industry. If anything, 90s anime are gems to be treasured and rewatched all over again.

Of course, 21st-century titles like Jojo’s Bizarre Adventures and My Hero Academia lived up to expectations. Although the market is dumped by new unfamiliar series a day, it’s the best time to be alive. So, how about looking at our 18 best 90s anime picks for September? And make sure to visit your streaming service afterward!

Note: Some manga and anime spoilers ahead. No rankings are also made, as every anime in this list is equally outstanding.

1. Detective Conan

Detective Conan with his signature move (one of the best 90s anime).

Detective Conan may not be in the “big three”, but for the majority of Southeast Asian viewers, it’s a classic. This 90s anime is one of the longest-running series, boasting 1000 episodes—props to the mangaka Aoyama Gosho for creating this masterpiece.

Detective Conan is the main protagonist of the series. He initially goes by the name of Shinichi Kudo, helping the Japanese police close case after case. But one day, a member of the Black Organization (the bad guys) drugged him with the APTX 4869. It’s a one-way trip to death, but the young detective finds himself in a child’s body instead.

While it sounds unfortunate, Shinichi still has his S+ problem-solving skills. In the process, though, he adapted the pseudonym Conan Edogawa. As for his circumstance, the writer is yet to reveal. Since the Black Organization has the poison, they must have the cure, too (theoretically).

Detective Conan is less exciting than Baki (if you love action, fighting, and a lot of blood getting spilled altogether). But we recommend watching this 90s anime as you’ll learn a lot, especially in making sound decisions.

2. Pokemon

Pikachu and Ash Ketchum at the park in Pokemon (one of the best 90s animes).

Pokemon is a 90s anime that has shown massive success and impact on the world. For example, Pokemon GO made people touch grass (and on top of that, perhaps take cardio exercise to the next level). Don’t forget the game itself. Catching creatures with unique powers? We’re in!

Achievements-aside, if you have yet to watch Pokemon (or only heard of it), now’s the best time to do so. The anime centers around Ash Ketchum (Satoshi) with a grand dream of becoming a Pokemon Monster. For context, he has to win every league tournament, be updated with the lore, and catch as many Pokemons as possible.

Ash Ketchum is well-known for his bond with Pikachu, albeit a rough start. Sometime later, Satoshi crossed roads with Kasumi (Misty) and Takeshi (Brock) – water and rock-type Pokemon trainers, respectively. Their journey isn’t easy and full of hurdles. It’s more than just a linear goal, as they have to deal with the likings of Team Rocket.

3. Princess Mononoke

Princess Mononoke and her wolf staring at the ground.

Hayao Miyazaki’s Princess Mononoke is one the best 90s masterpieces we’re including in this list. To clarify, it’s a two-hour-long film. Still, the story and character writing are both wonderful.

Princess Mononoke revolves around the life of Prince Ashitaka in 14th-century Japan.

One day, the Emishi village is raided by a boar-like demon threatening bloodshed and destruction. Prince Ashitaka responded and risked his life to protect the tribe. Upon victory, the young protagonist received arguably a blessing and a curse. Prince Ashitaka shall win every battle with his superhuman strength at the expense of his life draining away slowly.

Upon consulting with fellow tribe members, Prince Ashitaka sets foot in Tatara and requests a cure from the deer god (Shishigami). The western area is currently facing a conflict between San (Princess Mononoke Hime) and Lady Eboshi. The former aims to preserve the forest and help the spirits residing within, while the latter is pro-deforestation. Prince Ashitaka steps in to help.

This film is already enough in itself, albeit demanding more episodes, as the world of Princess Mononoke is vast. It’s a classic theme you’ll find in most 90s entertainment, featuring themes of environmentalism and Shinto.

4. Sailor Moon

Usagi Tsukino waking up and using her abilities in Sailor Moon (one of the best 90s anime).

Naoko Takeuchi’s Sailor Moon is more than just girls in cute Japanese uniforms. That may be the case from the surface, but it’s inclined towards the “we have to protect the galaxy” niche.

Usagi Tsukino – the main protagonist of this 90s anime – starts her adventure upon stumbling across Luna. The talking feline gave Usagi a brooch, granting her the powers of the Sailor Moon. Note that there are also Sailor Guardians present that Usagi will meet throughout the journey.

We’re leaving out other points here (even though you should know it by reading). However, we believe Sailor Moon is best watched without a single spoiler, as you’ll be shocked by several plot twists! If there’s a shojo anime queen, Naoko and this work of hers should take the crown!

5. Neon Genesis Evangelion

Angels and Evangelions clashing in Neon Genesis Evangelion (one of the best 90s anime).

Neon Genesis Evangelion – one of the best 90s anime that aged like a fine wine. If you love pain or want to add more mental health problems, this series has you covered! No, there’s no kidding aside. Neon Genesis Evangelion has a highly depressing story.

The anime takes place in a futuristic Tokyo city, where Angels with varying powers wreaked havoc. Shinji Ikari is the main protagonist, tasked to neutralize Angels’ threats. Humanity’s best weapon at that time was the Evangelions or EVAs – a biomechanical humanoid mecha.

Unlike some 90s animes in this list, you can expect more plot twists and discoveries in Neon Genesis. One instance is that EVAs aren’t merely mindless machines but have human souls inside them. While those souls are necessary to make the Evangelions operational, it’s a pretty disturbing fact.

6. Berserk

Guts in Berserk.

Berserk is the work of the late Kentaro Miura. Although his latest work was released in September 2021, some fans speculate it’ll be the last, with no solid ending.

Berserk revolves around Guts – a member of the Band of the Hawks. Before joining the group, he was alone in his journey, eventually losing to the Hawks’ founder and leader, Griffith. The group has encountered countless hurdles but managed to conquer them with each passing time. However, expect twists and turns as you dive deeper into the story.

Although Berserk is a seinen anime, it can compete against various shonen titles, even to this day. We recommend watching the 1997 series with 25 episodes. But if you want a more detailed experience, the manga is your go-to place.

7. Cowboy Bebop

Faye Valentine and Spike Spiegel in Cowboy Bebop.

Excluding Cowboy Bebop in the best 90s animes list would be a crime. The title has been mentioned all over the internet, but there are many reasons why. One of them is excellent character writing. Be it Spike, Jet, or Ein, you’ll learn about their backstories we’re sure you can relate to.

It’s also worth mentioning that Cowboy Bebop takes place in 2071 when humans started colonizing other planets. The reason for this isn’t too far-fetched from this article’s writing, as Global Warming and other causes will come to bite us back.

Spike Spiegel – the series’ protagonist – comes into play when contacted for help by the Inter Solar System Police. The organization is a government-acknowledged peace-keeping organization with an extensive jurisdiction. Since cops can’t watch every sector, Spiegel is hired.

Spiegel is originally partnered with Jet Black – both are bounty hunters. With each episode passing, the Cowboys grew in numbers.

Although Cowboy Bebop has just 26 episodes, we consider it one of the best ones that stood the test of time.

8. One Piece

Luffy and Nami in One Piece (one of the best 90s anime until now).

One Piece is a Shonen anime that started airing in 1999. Eiichiro Oda – the creator – is yet to conclude the fate of Luffy and the Strawhat Pirates in their voyage to obtain the treasure.

The protagonist takes on a unique name of Monkey D. Luffy. After Gol D. Roger’s death at the hands of the government, he joined many aspiring pirates to cash out the One Piece. However, it isn’t easy, considering many skilled and highly experienced competitors have the same goal.

One Piece’s plot is a bit confusing at this point, as it has over 1,000 episodes now. But one thing to remember is the unending plot twists, creative character writing, and comical reliefs.

9. Yu-Gi-Oh!

Yugi Muto in Yu-Gi-Oh!

The concept of card-based battle may not be exclusive to the Yu-Gi-Oh! series, but it’s definitely one of the best in the 90s. You must anticipate multiple storylines here, including the fleshless deuteragonist living inside the protagonist’s body.

The series’ lore starts with Yugi Muto – a young boy who solved an ancient Egyptian artifact called the Millenium Puzzle. By doing so, the King of Games merged with Yugi, taking by the alter ego of Yami Yugi. The latter has a lot of deep history, and the main protagonist accompanies him to unearth every secret.

Yugi Muto encounters several duels throughout the series. It’s inevitable to lose, but once in a life-threatening situation, the alter ego rises to protect the whole crew. For example, cheating or losing opponents will suffer high-stake consequences like death. Of course, Yami Yugi isn’t the only one in the modern-day realm.

10. Mobile Suit Gundam Wing

Gundam Suits in Mobile Suit Gundam Wing.

In the 90s anime industry, there’s no shortage of sci-fi genres, including Mobile Suit Gundam Wing. Unfortunately, Japan isn’t fond of the series, but it still gained popularity in America – as if robots and guns aren’t unheard of in the region.

Kidding aside, we understand why it’s been a great show in the 90s and even still at this age. Note that Mobile Suit Gundam Wing is in the series’ After-Colony timeline, so expect many rebel elements here.

To recap, this world achieved a civilization where space colonies already exist. However, Treize Khushrenada manipulated the United Earth Sphere Alliance to be ruthless, hence the rise of rebels. One of them – Heero Yuy – is the main protagonist, accompanied by other members to free colonies using smuggled Mobile Suits made from Gundanium alloy.

In the heat of things, Heero’s mecha is shot down in the heart of enemy territory, forcing him to blend in. Now, he has more things to deal with besides defeating the corrupt government.

11. Hunter x Hunter

Gon Freeccs and Killua Zoldyck in one of the most popular 90s anime, Hunter x Hunter.

Hunter x Hunter’s main storyline is simple. A father has a son, goes back to hunting, then his son becomes aware. Instead of developing resentment toward his dad, who left for milk, he follows in his footsteps in the hopes of meeting him again.

So, what exactly is the deal with hunters? You get to do almost anything. This ranges from legally entering restricted zones to capturing rare creatures, treasures, and even humans. That’s what Gon Freecss and his friends are into, although others have goals beyond our comprehension.

No worries about spoilers. We’ve only given you what to expect while you watch this 90s anime. If you have an existential crisis like this list’s author and always question the point of something, hopefully, we’re helpful.

12. Great Teacher Onizuka

Onizuka in GTO.

If a 22-year-old delinquent can commit crimes, he also shall be excellent at teaching. It’s an uncommon case, but enter Onizuka Eikichi – the main character of this 90s anime.

Not all readers will appreciate Great Teacher Onizuka (considering his ulterior motives), but give it a try. Come back to us once you’ve finished all the episodes, and let us know how it goes. It’s a pretty old anime, and you might not like the humor, so proceed at your discretion.

13. Dragon Ball Z

Chi chi and Goku in Dragon Ball Z.

Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball Z is the continuation of the first installment of the titular series. As Goku reaches adulthood, new friends and foes come along, with unexpected storyline twists.

We can’t emphasize enough that DBZ is one of the best 90s anime on this list. Not to mention, it belongs to the “Big Four” titles, alongside Bleach, Naruto, and One Piece. Regardless, we’re crowning Dragon Ball Z as the king of Shonen anime.

A new threat has arrived in this installment, announcing their plans to take over Goku’s world. Unbeknownst to him, his half-brother, Raditz, is working with the bad guys. Later on, it’s revealed that Goku is meant to obliterate the planet’s inhabitants for the Saiyans – his race – to move in.

Bloodshed -aside, Dragon Ball Z has some fair share of wholesome moments. For example, two former villains have good character development. Even better, they joined forces to defeat the final boss of the series.

14. Trigun

Vash the Stampede in Trigun.

This 90s anime isn’t what you’d expect. Despite having the “I need to be stronger and defend people” cliche from the get-go, Yasuhiro Nightow had other plans.

Trigun is a story of Vash the Stampede on a fictional planet of No Man’s Land. Vash – the main character – is a renowned gunslinger on the constant run from bounty hunters.

Serial murders, theft, and destruction of properties are what Vash is facing – at least in the eyes of the July City Military Police. Imagine putting 60 billion double dollars on your head!

If you’re looking for a unique anime perspective, we recommend Trigun. There’s also a 2023 reboot you can watch by the title Trigun Stampede.

15. Digimon

Digimon World (one of the best 90s anime).

Digimon sounds like a weird sibling of the Pokemon and Tamagotchi, but hear us out. This title has to be one of many watch-worthy 90s anime because of the character writing and main storyline.

Like most anime, Digimon takes the approach of the “I see evil, I go kill”. But this one has a twist – seven kids are transported inside the Digital World, and you have friendly (and not-so-friendly) talking creatures everywhere!

16. The Magnificent Zorro

Zorro in The Legend of Zorro.

Sukehiro Tomita’s Kaiketsu Zorro is among the few straightforward 90s anime to watch. The story revolves around Don Diego Vega, who returns to his home soil that a tyrant now rules. That’s when he has to dress up as Zorro and fight the ruler.

17. Slam Dunk

Sakuragi Hanamichi practicing and enhancing his physical skills in Slam Dunk.

Notice how most animes and mangas reaching the top ranks have fantasy elements? That’s because the sports genre isn’t as fascinating as series like Dragon Ball and Naruto. However you put it, Slam Dunk begs to differ, and there are good reasons why.

Slam Dunk centers around an aspiring basketball player named Sakuragi who wants to bring home an attractive girl. But kidding aside, imagine Takehiko Inoue (the mangaka) plays the main character and levels up his stats. That aspect in this 90s anime is the selling point as to why Slam Dunk is popular and has withstood the test of time.

18. Rurouni Kenshin

Kenshin Himura and Kamiya Kaoru in Rurouni Kenshin (one of the best 90s anime).

If Sakuragi’s basketball journey is about going from zero to hero, Himura Kenshin is slightly different. Kenshin is a legendary swordsman feared by many in the opposition. However, he decided to get out of the glory game and help people in need instead of refusing to murder.

Himura Kenshin’s journey starts upon encountering a troubled lady in the martial arts dojo and what journey awaits beyond.

Unique anime hairstyle in the scene.

Ask yourself. When’s the last time you’ve watched an anime or read a manga chapter with some goofy characters sporting a unique hairdo? It’s probably not too long ago. After all, you can almost find one, regardless of whether the title is a global hit or otherwise.

This list compiles 18 characters from different anime titles. While a few in this list have unconventional hairstyles, we don’t mean to tease them (although some are pretty funny). Still, let it sink in if, for instance, you’ve met their real-life counterparts.

Warning: Anime and Manga spoilers ahead.

18. Usagi Tsukino (Sailor Moon)

Usagi Tsukino from Sailor Moon.

Sailor Moon is one of the best 90s anime created by Naoko Takeuchi. In this fictional world are countless Sailors with their quirks, which makes them loveable. But one particular person – the Sailor Moon herself – caught the eyes of many because of her aesthetics.

Usagi Tsukino, throughout the series, has sported several forms. But her Eternal Form takes the cake. Her unforgettable blonde odango with long pigtails and two circlets makes the character as charming as ever. Plus, don’t get us started with the cute wing barrettes in her hair!

17. Giorno Giovanna (Jojo’s Bizarre Adventures: Golden Wind)

Giorno Giovanna from Jojo's Bizarre Adventures: Golden Wind.

This “GioGio” is in competition with Josuke Higashikata’s pompadour hairstyle, but nothing beats his long blonde hair with three mini-donuts present. We could easily have put Diavolo and Abbacchio, but they definitely deserve the top x hot anime characters list.

But seriously, Giorno Giovanna’s hairstyle is one of the most iconic from Hirohiko Araki’s masterpiece. It’s noteworthy that Giorno’s hair color was originally black and changed after a Stand awakening. If there’s anyone to blame for this unique anime hairstyle, go directly to Gold Experience.

16. Kars (Jojo’s Bizarre Adventures: Battle Tendency)

Kars from Jojo's Bizarre Adventures Battle Tendency.

In the middle of JJBA season two, besides having a good build, Kars’ appearance keeps his wrapped hair. This iconic anime hairstyle kept many viewers like us wondering what was hiding beneath the cloth. When Joseph Joestar and Lisa Lisa persuaded Kars and Wamuu to fight for the Stone of Aja, the latter unveiled his long, dark, wavy hair.

It’s a pretty unconventional hairstyle but one that gave us a mix of awe and fear. Reasons being: 1) Sign of honor; and 2) Sign of aggression. Regardless, even a millennium-old pillar man can pull off a remarkable fashion in the near-ending world of Jojo is something worth looking at.

15. Ken Kaneki (Tokyo Ghoul)

Ken Kaneki from Tokyo Ghoul.

Tokyo Ghoul’s first-ever episode shows a black-haired Ken Kaneki before the events of Rize Kamishiro. The young male protagonist undergoes several changes, but one of the most iconic involves his hairstyle. Before the first season wrapping up, we’ve witnessed an extremely traumatized Kaneki turning his hair white. Even crazier – the process is almost instantaneous.

Now, story aside, it’s one of the most fascinating anime hairstyles we’ve ever encountered. The overall character design is genuinely good. But if anything about that hair color transformation, we’ll attribute it to the Marie Antoinette Syndrome.

14. Himiko Toga (My Hero Academia)

Himiko Toga from My Hero Academia.

If you’ve been watching My Hero Academia season two, Himiko Toga most likely captivated your eyes. This character easily has one of the best anime hairstyles yet, having pale, ash-blonde colored buns. And note: it isn’t as organized as Sailor Moon’s, but it’s the main reason why she’s one of the best girls in MHA.

Horikoshi’s overall design of Toga-chan compliments her unpredictable nature. One can describe her as being ruthless to heroes while showing care to the League of Villains members, especially Twice. Design-wise, and the fact that she shows a Yandere-like tendency, makes her even more remarkable.

13. Shoto Todoroki (My Hero Academia)

Shoto Todoroki from My Hero Academia.

The current no. 1 Hero – Endeavor – is a father to the young prodigy, Shoto. Shoto Todoroki is the result of a quirk marriage between his father and Rei, thus making his hair similar to his quirk. Although there’s a dark backstory behind Shoto’s hairstyle in My Hero Academia, it’s definitely unique.

If you’re trying Shoto’s hair color for yourself, you need to apply the following colors:

 • Crimson Red (left, from your view)
 • White (right, from your view)

12. Zaraki Kenpachi (Bleach)

Zaraki Kenpachi from Bleach.

Zaraki Kenpachi is one of many characters in Bleach that hones strength to the next level. One of the latest proofs is his battle against Retsu Unohana in the Thousand-Year Blood War arc.

Another reason why Kenny is such a remarkable character is because of his spiky hair. Call him a Zanpakuto-wielding sea-urchin, but it gets even weirder. Before the time skip, his hairstyle is spikier, with bells protruding at the end.

11. Ichigo Kurosaki (Bleach)

Ichigo Kurosaki from Bleach.

Bleach fans have a fair share of opinions regarding the anime, and one can argue most of them aren’t good to hear. Despite its reputation, Ichigo Kurosaki has one of the best anime hairstyles in the series, featuring unforgettable orange-dyed strands.

10. Jessie (Pokemon)

Jessie from Pokemon.

Remember Pikachu and Ash from your childhood? What a time to be alive, isn’t it? Then there’s Jessica, James, and Meowth. Throughout the Pokemon anime, they’ve been portrayed as antagonists tasked to steal powerful Pokemons. Among the hit list is Pikachu, which they keep failing to capture.

Jessica is one of the more iconic in the trio because of her hairstyle. Visually, it appears as a lengthy magenta-colored hair she curls into a comet-shaped thing. Talk about being bizarre. She probably spends more time being crafty with her hair than preparing for raids.

9. Yugi Moto (Yu-Gi-Oh!)

Yugi Muto from Yu-Gi-Oh!

Yugi’s anime hairstyle may single-handedly be the weirdest and most unforgettable on this list. His hair is by far the only one with three different colors styled in an even more interesting manner.

Yugi’s overall character design is even more complemented by a shifted personality, gambling all the way to impressive win streaks.

8. Kyojuro Rengoku (Demon Slayer)

Rengoku Kyojuro, sporting the best anime hairstyle in Demon Slayer.

Rengoku being the Flame Hashira in Demon Slayer shouldn’t come as a surprise as to why his hairstyle is one of the most unique. By appearance, he sports bright yellow hair that ends in red flakes, resembling flames. While it may seem unique, if you’ve watched until the Mugen Train arc or beyond, his family has the same hairdo!

His last words are the Flame Hashira’s everlasting legacy to Tanjiro and the rest of the crew. It’s not even coincidental to correlate it to his breathing technique. But one thing’s for certain: those words powered throughout the series thanks to the beloved Pillar.

7. Daki (Demon Slayer)

Daki (on the villain side), having the best hairstyle in Demon Slayer.

Daki is the former Upper Moon Six in the events of the Entertainment District, and what a ride we have there. Her beautiful appearance might have toppled our girl Mitsuri, but she ruined it with veins popping up whenever things didn’t go her way.

In her complete demon form, Daki has long silver hair that ends in lime green highlights. Note that her silver hair has a ponytail with three kanzashi hairpins on each side, signifying her Upper Moon rank. This anime hairstyle certainly fits her personality, which covers deceit in the guise of being too attractive.

6. Saitama (One Punch Man)

Saitama from One Punch Man.

Now, hold on. Despite the absence of a single strand, Saitama’s bald head is technically still a hairstyle. So, before you say we’re dissing Caped Baldy, we’d like to offer an explanation. Regardless, even if you see him with black hair, Saitama undeniably rocked it with confidence.

As to why Saitama lost his hair, it’s the result of rigorous training to become a hero. Imagine having to consistently work your muscles hard for three years at the expense of your hair. That’s something we deeply respect!

5. Asta (Black Clover)

Asta from Black Clover.

There’s no shortage of finding an unforgettable character in shonen animes. But recently, Black Clover has been catching up to the hype. The series showcases all things magic – with Asta as the protagonist – trying to become the next Wizard King.

By default, Asta’s hairstyle consists of a messy ash blond with a single strand sticking out upwards from his head. He also has stylish bangs in front of his forehead, which is one of the most iconic in Black Clover.

4. Celestia Ludenberg (Danganronpa)

Celestia Ludenberg from Danganronpa.

We know what you’re thinking. She has the most attractive dress on this list and a spicy hairstyle. That’s Lady Celestia Ludenberg for you – or Yasuhiro Taeko if you want to catch her attention!

Celestia Ludenberg is a character from the Danganronpa anime based on the visual novel Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc. Her hairstyle is stylized into two large twin-drill pigtails without noticeable dyeing. At the head’s base is a big white lace bonnet accompanied by a white ribbon. Pair that with a European-style outfit, and you have the perfect waifu!

3. Mikasa Ackerman (Attack on Titan)

Mikasa Ackerman from Attack on Titan.

Others might argue there’s nothing special with Mikasa’s anime hairstyle. But we know it’s her, even if it’s just the silhouette – and there’s a good reason why.

Mikasa Ackerman is the deuteragonist of Attack on Titan, alongside Eren Yeager and Armin Arlert. Not only she’s extremely attractive throughout the series, but she also showcases impressive skills since the trio joined the 104th Survey Corps. She has a varying hairstyle, from neck-long cuts to using a ponytail after not cutting it for three years.

Regardless of the style, Mikasa Ackerman takes the cake here, surpassing Annie or Sasha. But if you beg to differ, that’s alright.

2. Kakashi Hatake (Naruto)

Kakashi Hatake from Naruto.

If you haven’t watched Naruto even once, we’ll still argue that Kakashi is one of the most popular characters in the series. His iconic Sharingan and Raikiri – be it on the anime itself or memes – have probably reached your news feed.

Kakashi’s hairstyle strikes a strong resemblance to his father – a spiky white hair that’s usually oriented on the left side. Add to that aesthetic is a forehead protector made of a metal plate and some cloth. Don’t get Kakashi wrong. It’s not just a fashion choice. Once he removes the forehead protector, things usually become more interesting.

1. Goku (Dragon Ball)

Goku from Dragon Ball.

As one of the big four in the anime world, excluding Goku from this list would be a crime. His character design consists of spiked black hair, three bangs to the right, and two bangs on the left. While this hairstyle starts to become generic – given the rise of other titles – Goku is arguably the most iconic.

Note that Goku’s anime hairstyle changes depending on his Super Saiyan forms. Regardless, he manages to pull it off well.
